Surfing Schools

Over the last few years more and more surfing schools are popping up all over the world. You can find them for almost any stage of surfing knowledge and even for women only. While it has always seemed that it was an activity for the young there are growing numbers of people who are discovering the joys of riding the waves in their 30's or 40's. It is a sport that can provide you with years of fun and exercise and help you keep fit. Large numbers of surfers are self-taught or have been shown by a fellow surfer - but if you decide to take up this recreation later in life you will probably find that you will get more out of it with some proper instruction at the start. After all, it takes many years to become a master of this sport.

So what kinds of things are you likely to learn at a surf school? You will learn some very important aspects of safety, surfing etiquette to enable you and everyone else in the surf to enjoy it to it's utmost and you will learn how to stand up on your surf board and how to ride the waves. You will learn about the equipment you need and what is best for you. You will learn how to take care of your surfboard. You will also learn that you need to practice and practice if you are going to progress to become an experienced surfer. All of these things will be taught to you by someone who has the experience and understanding necessary to provide you with the knowledge you need at a pace you are comfortable with. You will be with someone who has your safety as a primary concern.

You can find schools that have surfing camps or retreats whereby you can spend a week or more learning to surf while you are on your vacation. If you are lucky enough to live on the coast you can choose to take lessons at times that suit your schedule and according to the tides. Your local school will help you with detailed information regarding the tides and how this effects the surf - when it is good conditions and when it is too large a swell for a complete beginner. Surfing is more of a lifestyle and not something that you will do on occasion - most people who learn to surf become totally addicted and will surf whenever they have the opportunity, traveling to many different locations to search for that perfect wave. But before you can do that you need to learn how to read the conditions and how to stay safe. Finding a surf school that fits your needs is as easy as looking them up online or in your local phone directory - calling and speaking to them and perhaps talking with some people who have had lessons at that school. Don't let the idea that it is for youngsters only or skinny, superfit people - it can be done by virtually anyone - of any age, gender or size.
