Dry Skin Care Secrets

Good skin care is important. If you have dry skin, having a good skin care routine is even more necessary. Some people are genetically predisposed to have dry skin. In the winter, everyone tends to get dry skin at some point due to the lack of humidity in the air. Our skin also becomes drier with age. Dry skin is irritating because it tends to be itchy. Severely dry skin can lead to eczema. It is important to maintain a good skin care regime to fight dry skin before it starts. There are several ways to combat dry skin.

Dietary measures are an important part of skin care. One of the most important things to remember is to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. This will hydrate the skin from the inside out. Eating a well balanced diet with lots of fiber, fruits and vegetables will also help keep the body running smoothly and keeps skin looking its best.

When bathing, taking shorter baths or showers will aid in dry skin care. Excess water removes the natural moisturizers from the skin. Limit showers or baths to one per day. Hot water dries skin out so make sure to use lukewarm water. Also use a good moisturizing soap and stay away from antibacterial soaps, which dry out the skin. Soap should be used sparingly. Do not lather up your whole body. Only use soap on the areas that need it most. For your face, make sure to only use a gentle cleanser made just for the face, as anything else will be too harsh. After bathing, pat skin dry as rubbing may rub away the oils from the skin. Moisturizer should be applied immediately after bathing while skin is still slightly wet. Heavy moisturizers should be used in the winter whereas in the summer, lighter moisturizers should be used.

In the summer avoid swimming as much as possible. In the winter, avoid indoor pools. As previously mentioned, soaking will only remove the natural moisturizers and dry out the skin. If you must swim be sure to rinse off the chlorine as soon as you get out of the pool. The sun dries out skin as well so the sun should be avoided to aid in dry skin care. Do not tan outside or visit tanning salons. A good humidifier will aid skin care immensely in the winter months. A small humidifier in the bedroom is preferred to a general house humidifier as it will put more moisture in the air and help with skin care while you sleep.

If you have dry skin on your feet, a pumice stone should be used after bathing to remove excess skin. Make sure to apply a good moisturizer to the feet. Petroleum jelly can be very helpful in foot skin care. Make sure to wear socks over the moisturizer, especially at night to help lock in the moisturizer.

With a little extra care and attention, dry skin will become a thing of the past.
