Fresh Surfing Locations

Surfers are always looking for that virgin surf, the last great wave or the best break - well here are three places that are still relatively unspoiled and definitely not crowded.

1. Micronesia, Caroline Islands - You will need a boat to get to the breaks here, which are all one to two miles off shore and similar to the way it is in Tahiti. There are passes on both sides of the island but the most consistent is found on the North West side. P-Pass is a right hand break, fast and hollow - a world class barrel wave. Plenty of water on high and medium tides and caution on low tide. Majority of the winds come from the side and from offshore. With an inside section that should be avoided, the Pass has section that wraps around softly. A fun wave that is not as likely to swell as Main Pass, however this really should be surfed by intermediate to expert surfers. Main Pass is ten minutes offshore and if you are looking for a comparable wave it would have to be Sunset. This is a right reef pass and should only be surfed at high tide and by very experienced surfers. There are many opportunities to surf virtually undiscovered waves and reefs here and this should be on your list of places to visit. With only one hotel on the island - owned and run by surfers themselves - this has to be a surfer's paradise!

2. Maldives, Outer Atolls - Situated on the equator in the Indian Ocean, this group of islands is straight out of a surfer's dream. Pristine beaches with white sand, crystal clear turquoise waters that are always warm and beautiful coral reefs that teem with a variety of marine life. Only recently accessible to surfers this is one place that you will find no crowds at all - in fact you will find very little other than the natural beauty of the area. You will need to take all equipment with you and it is recommended that you have two sized boards with you to cover the different conditions. Monsoon season varies according to whether you are on the northern end of the islands or the southern. Northern side sees the rainy season from November through April with February being the driest month. Southern end monsoon time is May through October. Booties are a necessary part of your luggage because of the sharp coral and a helmet is a good idea also. Sunscreen with a high SPF and a rash guard should be used for protection against the strong solar radiation.

3. Oaxaca, Mexico - This state has approximately 100 miles of shoreline with numerous places to find good surf. So far it is relatively undiscovered so you need to make your move as early as possible before the rest of the world homes in on it. With at least 10 areas along the stretch of coastline and a variety of beach breaks you are not going to have any trouble finding what you want and it is also one area in the world that has the most consistent swell. Mysto beach breaks that can compete with Puerto, but without the crowds the predominant surf is right hand, jetty and sand bottom point. Punta Cuicatlan,Tehuantepec andTuxtepecare just three of the areas you can find world class surfing breaks. Some are accessible only by boat but you will find no other surfers there and there are waves for every level of surfer somewhere along this coast. Well worth the trip!
