Girls in Surf
Women surfers have been around for a few generations, but it has not been until recently that they have been encouraged to take up surfing seriously as a sport and pursue professional careers in waters sports. Despite these efforts they still remain sidelined compared to the number of males who go on to make it professionally.
Surfer Girls has put up a list of well known women surfers along with their biographies. These women provide inspiration to those girls who enjoy surfing and the sea and to whom it means a lot.
Erica Hosseini was born in 1987 in Palm Springs, CA. She was always a competitive sportsperson and learned to ski at the age of 2 from her mother. She was mountain biking at the age of 4. She started surfing at 11 years old, and took part in her first competition at age 13. At age 14, she won second prize in the Fosters Cup at Lower Trestles, thus becoming the youngest person to finish in the final of a professional surfing competition.
Keala Kennelly, born in 1978 in Kauai, Hawaii, got her first surfboard at the age of five. She leaded a childhood that was heavily influenced by her father and brothers, who she looked up to and competed with at the sport. Growing up without much female influence did not deter her from her goals. She went on to ride the biggest tow-in wave for a woman. She was also the first woman to win the Teahupoo event.
Megan Abubo was born in 1978 in Conneticut. Her family moved to Hawaii when she was a child, and she started surfing at age 10 in Wakiki. After winning 7 titles as an amateur, she went professional in 1994. She is famous for having appeared in the film 'Blue Crush'.
