Surfing for women is catching up steadily along with the other sports that women are making headway in. In 2003 there was a reality TV show aired by MTV which had amateur women surfers competing for a chance to go professional. Today more and more women are taking it up as a hobby or competitively. Here is a brief list of girls on surf and women surfers. For more information check out our women surfers section.

Daize Shayne, born in 1977 in Yucaipa, CA. She took up surfing when her family moved to Hawaii when she was a child. She had a supportive high school principal who encouraged her to surf as much as she wanted to. She worked hard at it and won several competitions over the years. She is a two time world champion longboarder.

Christa Alves, born in 1989 in New Jersey, is the new US National Champion. Even though she has only been surfing competitively for four years she is already making waves. She will be participating in competitions world-wide soon and hopes to qualify for the world tour. She is looking to finish school at present. In addition she plays the clarinet and loves jazz music.

Malia Jones was born in 1977 in Loma Linda, CA, into a surfing family. She won the US Junior Championship at age 15, and still surfs as much as possible. She now models professionally, and was initially signed on by Surfer Magazine. She has also appeared in others such as Cosmopolitan, Esquire, People, Maxim and Shape. She was a consultant for the movie 'Lilo and Stitch'. The strangest place she says she has ever surfed was at the Maldives near India.

The list also includes Bethany Hamilton, the famous woman who survived a shark attack while surfing and subsequently returned to the sport.
