The world of sports thrives on excitement and that great rush of adrenaline. The more the sport is thrilling and risky, the more popular it becomes. Popularity of any sport naturally leads to its use for entertainment, such as high-profile matches, and making movies and videos based on it.

Surfing has emerged as an interesting sport during the past few decades. It has even come out of his macho image and surfing girls are a common sight these days. The danger associated with it has made it a trendy plotline for moviemakers all over the world.

There have been plenty of surf-based movies made in the past, some of them even girls surf movies. The movie considered greatest of all those is the Endless Summer, made in 1966, by Bruce Brown. Like most surf movies, it was made in documentary style. It was so successful, that even a sequel documentary was made in 1994.

As more and more women became interested in surfing, more girls surf movies began to be made. That explains why there were so many girl surf movies were being made after year 2000. There are documentary style girl surf movies, such as Step into Liquid (2003), Billabong Odyssey (2003), Riding Giants (2004), and more recently, The Greats of Women's Surfing: Surfer's Journal Biography in year 2007. These documentaries deal with the origin and history of surfing, and also the current scenario of the sport.

There have also been girl surf movies in more entertaining forms like drama, comedy, and action. Big Wednesday was released in 1978, and dealt a comical outlook on 1960's-70's lifestyle of surfers in the surfing paradise of California. North Shore released in 1987, and Blue Crush in year 2002 are romantic girls surf movies which are popular.
