How to Overcome Your Addictions, for Fitness



Overeating can be an addiction, and smoking certainly is. The anti-smoking campaigns in the media in the last few years have made everyone aware of the risks we run if we continue to smoke. But knowing is not doing, and many people find it well nigh impossible to kick the habit. But lack of success in the past should not defeat you; if you are a smoker, stopping is probably the single most important step you can take toward better health and a longer life - even more important than losing weight.

If you are an overweight smoker, and you are determined to lose weight, both for your health and appearance, then before you begin a planned diet you should cut out smoking. Tobacco kills vitamins and lowers the body's resistance to disease, particularly to air-borne viruses - a side effect you should be aware of if you are cutting down on body-building food intake - and it also has a depressant effect on appetite. This last might seem to be an asset if you are trying to lose weight, but in actual fact it merely acts as a mask to the body's natural craving for food.

Most experts advice that if you have made up your mind to stop smoking, you will probably stand a better chance of being successful if you can go 'cold turkey' - in other words, stop smoking all at once. This may seem like an impossible demand to make on someone who has smoked 10-30 cigarettes a day, but psychologically it works better for most people than attempting the 'slowly does it' campaign of a cigarette less every day. But only you can decide the best way to quit - it's not the way, it's the quitting that counts!
