Biography
Lynne Boyer was born in Allentown, PA in 1956. When she was a young girl, she was raised in Maryland until she was 11. When she was 11, her family moved to Hawaii and this is when she began surfing. Boyer turned pro right out of high school. She placed 3rd in the state championship in 1973 and won a state championship in 1975. Her first pro win was the Hang Ten Pro Championship in Malibu in which she made $1500. Lynne was known for her low attacking crouch and working her board all the times as well as making her surfboards stand out from the other surfers. In 1977, she had her first professional year and in this year she won 3 out of 9 events. In 1978, she finally became world champion after much hard work. She repeated this victory in 1979. In 1980, she was a runner up in the world championships. In 1981-83, her rankings slipped from 4 to 5 to 8. The last title she won was the world cup at Kaleiwa in 1984 but she disappeared from the scene after this. She quit the surfing tour in 1985 due to a drug addiction.
Since the end of her career, Boyer said it took her 13 years to clean up her act and to love surfing again. Besides still surfing for fun, she is a painter and lives in Hawaii still. She was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame. She will forever be remembered.
