Biography

Sofia Mulanovich was raised in Lima, Peru near a beach community Punta Hermosa. At the age of 3, she body boarded and learned to swim. At the age of 9, she began riding standing up. In Peru, almost everyone was a male surfer so she learned from the guys including her 2 brothers. Her one particular mentor though was Magoo de la Rosa from Peru. She began entering contest at the age of just 13 years old. Billabong Peru sponsored her to the US Open for surfing and she made it to the quarter finals. In 1998, she won the Pan American championship in Brazil. In 1999, she finally made it to the pros. In 2000, she was 17 and she placed 3rd in the women's division of biannual world surfing games. In 2002, she won the world surfing games. In 2003, her first season on world tour and she was named rookie of the year and finished number 7. She is know a sports hero in Peru and finished the 2004 season as world champion. Sofia was a 2007 inductee to international surfing hall of fame. Currently in 2009, she is ranked 3rd in the world. Sofia has been on the tour for 7 years. Her sponsors are Roxy wetsuits and clothing, Red Bull energy drinks, Reef footwear, Channel Islands surfboards, Movistar, LAN airlines and Dakine accessories. Her favorite place to catch waves is in her native Peru. Her favorite surfers are Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Mick Faning, Chelsea Hedges and Stephanie Gilmore,

Some random facts about Sofia are that she is trilingual (Spanish/English/French) and she was also in the film 'Blue Crush' which was made my Rochelle Ballard's husband, Bill Ballard. In her free time, she likes to sleep, train and hang out with friends.
