Biography
Stephanie Gilmore's life as a surfer began at age 10 when she stood on a bodyboard. Her first surf board was a 5'9" Local Knowledge bought used from a nearby furniture store. She instantly fell in love with the freedom she felt while surfing. At 17 years old, she was entering world tour events as a wildcard competitor. This worked to her advantage and she had a victory at the 2005 Roxy Pro Gold Coast. This made her the youngest person to when a tour event. In the next season, she won another wildcard event at the 2006 Havaianas Beachley Classic. Gilmore success qualified her for the 2007 Foster's ASP Women's World Tour. She won 4 events in 2007 and claimed the World Title in her rookie season. Gilmore just graduated high school. In 2008, Stephanie won the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, Movistar Classic Mancora Peru pres. by Rip Curl, Roxy Pro Sunset Beach, and the Billabong Pro Maui. She won the world title in 2008 as well. So far in 2009, Gilmore has won the Roxy Pro Gold Coast competition and she is in the lead on the women's tour. With so much success, many people think she is the next Layne Beachley because of her level of dominance on the tour thus far. Her sponsors are Rip Curl wetsuits and clothing, DHD surfboards, and Creatures of Leisure accessories. Her favorite places to catch waves are Greenmount, D'Bah, Honolua Bay and Macaronis. Her favorite surfers are Tom Curren, Rob Machado, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson (Parko), Lisa Andersen, Chelsea Georgeson and Jay Phillips.
Outside of surfing, Stephanie likes music, playing guitar and sky-diving. She also works with charitable organizations.
