The Surf Girls
In May 2003, MTV aired a reality television show that featured women surfers from various parts of the American continents. It consisted of 14 amateurs who were looking for a chance to go professional. It started on May 12, 2003, and lasted till July 7, 2003. Thirteen of the contestants were from the United States, while one contestant was from Puerto Rico.
The contestants were: Jen Pollock, Katie Thornton, Molli Miller, Robyn Tassi-Curry, Bonnie Campanella, Heidi Drazich, Neva Massey and Lauren Stinson in the Short board category; Kula Barbieto, Aimee Vogelgesang, Mary Osbourne, Jenna Groshans, April Grover and Vivian Cordero in the Long board category.
The winner for the short board category was Jen Pollock, and the winner for the long board category was Mary Osbourne. The oldest member was Jen Pollock of Kailua, Hawaii, at 24 years of age. The youngest contestants were Aimee Vogelgesang, Molli Miller, Jenna Groshans and Bonnie Campanella, who were 18 years of age.
The only contestant from outside the United States, Neva Massey, 19, was a restaurant hostess from Rincon, Puerto Rico. She dropped out of the contest after the second episode was aired. Jen Pollock, the winner, was a college student and a waitress from Kailua in Hawaii. Mary Osbourne also worked as a waitress while studying in college. She was from Ventura, California.
There were two high school students who took part in the competition. Molli Miller, from Atlantic Beach in Florida, and Jenna Groshans from Oxnard, California. Two of the contestants were eliminated during the show: Bonnie Campanella, in the 3rd episode, and Katie Thornton in the 6th episode. Three girls dropped out: Neva Massey and Aimee Vogelgesang in the 2nd episode and Lauren Stinson in the 3rd episode. The show was the first of its kind to air on MTV.
