Tips for Eating Healthily
The following are some tips on how to eat healthily:
- All fish is nutritious, but white fish has even less fat than the oily varieties such as mackerel, herring or sardines.
- If you are eating canned fish, always drain thoroughly. Try to use fish packed in brine or tomato sauce rather than in vegetable oil.
- Remove the skin from chicken and poultry before eating it, if it has not been removed before cooking (it is often kept on during cooking to impart flavor). You will save about 20 calories an ounce.
- If you are eating meat, trim off all visible fat before cooking - and before eating, if you are at a restaurant.
- If a recipe calls for cream, try substituting low-calorie yoghurt or I % fromage frais.
- Sometimes there is no substitute - but then use as as possible or go without!
- Try not to peel vegetables whenever possible: simply wash and scrub them, Eat vegetables raw as often as possible. When you do cook, only do so until they are tender-crisp - never until soft (unless you are making a puree!).
- Use non-stick frying pans and saucepans as often as possible. While butter or oil must be used for sauteeing, you can use low-fat and dairy spreads for sauces and oven-roasting.
- Grill, bake or steamy whenever you have the option. These are the three best ways to preserve nutrients and lose fat.
- Try beginning meals with a first course of fruit - grilled grapefruit, sliced peaches with cottage cheese or a salad of tomatoes or greens. Cut down your- main course proportionally. It's a neat cheat for filling up - and cutting down on calories.
